Sophomore Year

The summer before my sophomore year was full of many more wonderful memories:

So many parties, sleepovers and toilet papering

Tennis with friends

Raging Waters, Cherry Hill, Surf n Swim

Ping pong, pool, pinochle and movies

Young Women Camp and Youth Conference

A visit to camp Loll and a trip to Bear Lake

School clothes shopping, regional dances and stomps

Sophomore year was another transition year.  I knew about a 6th of the kids at the high school, so there were a lot that I didn’t know and it was intimidating.  I had tried out for “Lady Lace,” the female show choir at the end of 9th grade and made it, so at least I had somewhere to belong.  I was also in Pep Club which was a large, fun group of sophomore girls, cheering for our school!

I found out really quickly that High School was pretty fun.  During Homecoming week, I decided to play powderpuff football.  My friend Troy leant me his helmet and pads and I played safety.  During the game I had an amazing tackle.  We were playing against the seniors and a girl named Ricci Lake got the ball and was running down the sideline.  I sprinted at a good angle and tackled her out of bounds at high speed.  We both flew through the air and it felt amazing!  The crowd went nuts and tons of dudes cleared the stands to come give me a high five.  It was a special moment that I will never forget.  Turns out, Ricci Lake ended up being the student athlete of the year, and little old me took her out.

During the fall, I loved going to the football games. I went to Homecoming with Troy Stevenson (Angie married his brother, Ryan.)  For Pep Club, I spent 2 weeks as a “cheerleader.”  We learned the cheers and would go cheer at the sophomore games.  I was in a roadshow for our ward and was called as Miamaid president.  I got a 4.0 my first term at LHS, woohoo.  During Christmas, our singing group would go perform at elementary schools throughout the district and in sacrament meeting on Sundays.  It seemed like we had a performance every day.  I also decided to be in the musical, “Mame,”  and had practices after school and on Saturdays.  I was keeping very busy and having a lot of fun.

Toward the end of my sophomore year, David got his mission call to Toronto, Canada.  I attended a bunch of farewells during that time (all of his friends).  David was a really sweet brother, always giving me compliments and telling me that I was neat.  That spring I got released as Miamaid president and got a new calling…youth camp director.  I always tried to attend the seminary morningsides which were sometimes a testimony meeting and other times a speaker.  I often invited my friends to go with me and sometimes they would.   I went to my first prom and morp with my first “real boyfriend,” Dixon.  He was a senior, so I thought I was cool.  Looking back, he wasn’t even cute and my dress choice was awful. It looked like a bridal gown. To earn money, I cleaned the carpets at my dad’s clinic a few times.

On my birthday that year, Marci had a radio station give me a shoutout.  Bart and Don took me for ice cream in a yellow convertible.  I went to Pizza Hut with Mindy and some other friends and Dixon decorated my bedroom and hung out with me that night.  I probably felt pretty loved.

For Lady Lace, we got to take a trip to California.  What a blast!  We performed at Disneyland, Sea World, Knotts Berry Farm and a couple high schools.  We took a boat ride to Catalina Island one evening.  I was seasick, so I laid my head on my friend, Dixon’s lap, and he kissed me.  Yep, that was my first kiss.  We also saw Phantom of the Opera and visited Tijuana, Mexico.  It was such a fun trip with all my friends!

That summer, I was a youth leader at YW camp.  I helped with certification, I planned flag ceremonies, created and put notes on the girl’s sleeping bags each night.  I led songs and helped write our skit, “Click Busters.”  The girls asked me to play the main part.  I played the part of a nerd with no friends.  I sang a solo, “I’m All Alone.”  (We switched up the words to “You’re not alone.”)  We won the award for the funniest skit and I got an individual award for never forgetting to be nice.  I loved camp that year!
