Senior Year

Image
Senior year started out with a bang.  Within the first few weeks I helped plan 2 assemblies.  In the Sophomore assembly, we rocked to Guns and Roses as we welcomed the sophs to the “jungle” and helped with sophomore elections.  We also had a welcome assembly for the entire school.  For the welcome skit, I was assigned the role of the girl in the tight, short dress (not sure why this role was needed) and also performed with Laytones (there is video of this, if you’re interested.)   Football season was especially fun.  Our guy friends were finally the studs on the team and It was fun to cheer for them at the games.  I had gone on a few dates with Robb Kelly (my Junior Prom date) around that time and he was the star running back, so I felt kinda special, he said I was his good luck charm.  Often we would hang out before and after the games, but it didn't last long.  He changed interest in girls about as often as I changed underwear.  I...

Summer Trip

Image
The summer between my junior and senior year, my friend Marci invited me on a 19 day trip with her and her parents.  Her dad was a bus driver and had been asked to pick up a new bus in Georgia to bring back to Utah.  Lucky me! We flew to Atlanta where we did a tour of the World of Coca-Cola.  We taste tested over 40 different flavors.   We also went to the Underground Mall and Marci and I made a music video.  The second day we visited a plantation and went to Stone Mountain where we saw the coolest laser show. The next day was a long, hot, muggy drive to Kissimmee, Florida.  I recall there was no A/C and I had bad cramps.  I made myself a little bed and slept on the floor in the aisle.  (I was lucky It was a clean, brand-new bus) Day one in Florida we spent at Epcot Center.  I loved the world showcase.  Marci and I tried a tasty local cuisine from each country.  They were all good except the sashimi in Japan.  The octopus wasn’...

Junior Year

Image
The summer before my junior year I started dating a little more. The summer was filled with the usual; parties, movies, dances, Surf n Swim, volleyball, tubing at Bear Lake, just lots of fun.  My junior year started with a dilemma.  I got asked to Homecoming by a boy that I didn't want to go with.  He was a really nice, funny kid, but not someone I was interested in dating.  I knew there was another boy that had been thinking about asking me, so I reached out to let him know that if he wanted to ask me, he needed to do it right then.  That way, I was able to tell the first boy that I was going with someone else.  It didn’t stop the first boy though, he asked me to Senior Cotillion a few months later.  Maybe I should have just said yes the first time.   The social aspect of my junior year was less about parties and more about going on dates.  My dad sat me down and had me make a list of all of the boys that I thought were cute, or i...

Sophomore Year

Image
The summer before my sophomore year was full of many more wonderful memories:   So many parties, sleepovers and toilet papering  Tennis with friends Raging Waters, Cherry Hill, Surf n Swim  Ping pong, pool, pinochle and movies Young Women Camp and Youth Conference A visit to camp Loll and a trip to Bear Lake School clothes shopping, regional dances and stomps Sophomore year was another transition year.  I knew about a 6th of the kids at the high school, so there were a lot that I didn’t know and it was intimidating.  I had tried out for “Lady Lace,” the female show choir at the end of 9th grade and made it, so at least I had somewhere to belong.  I was also in Pep Club which was a large, fun group of sophomore girls, cheering for our school!   I found out really quickly that High School was pretty fun.  During Homecoming week, I decided to play powderpuff football.  My friend Troy leant me his helmet and pads and I played safety....

9th Grade

Front and Center with the Student Body Officers The summer between 8th and 9th grade was a bit of a transition point in my life.  Little by little, the peaceful innocence I had enjoyed during my younger years began to fade. I found myself in a battle between following Christ and becoming more drawn to the ways of the world.  My friends were facing a similar challenge and some of us fared better than others.  There began to be a divide among us.  On the weekends, choices were made.  There were often 2 competing parties on the same night, one with drinking and “making out” and a different party for those of us who chose not to do those things.  It was hard to watch some of my friends choose to “party.”  Some wholeheartedly embraced the party lifestyle, some went back and forth between the 2 groups and some of us stuck to the clean parties.  I did my best to stay away from anything that would offend the spirit.  On occasion, a “good” party would...

8th Grade

In 1988, I made a resolution to write in my journal every day.  For the next several years I wrote a little every day.  That's why I decided to abridge my journals, so that you don’t have to read my daily, repetitive entries. Wowza, 8th grade was one of my favorite years!  I loved being involved in student government, especially with MIndy Scothern and Joni Johansen, they became two of my best friends. We, the 8th grade officers, were put in charge of Valentine’s week and painted posters to market our events.  We sold flower grams, held daily competitions, and hosted the “Lovebird Ball.”  I was honored to be selected as the queen of the ball.  As officers, we supported as many of our school sporting events as possible, which was a blast.   We also got to take a field trip to the Utah legislative session.  On one occasion, Mindy and I got to be interviewed and sing a little jingle on KSL Radio to help raise money for Quarters for Christmasl.  ...
